Umpire Larry Gill

August 14, 2015 By JBBA 13 Comments

To all of our extended baseball family and coaches. Sadly, Umpire Larry Gill who has been a fixture at Jax Beach baseball games for many years, passed away on August 13th. He will be missed dearly by all of us at JBBA.

Umpire Larry Gill Jacksonville FL

Larry always had an infectious smile on his face, loved being on the field with the kids and being a part of their lives. As Larry always said, “it’s all about the kids”.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Details regarding his celebration of life are below.

The viewing will be held Saturday, August 22nd at 11am at The 3:20 Church. The funeral will be held immediately thereafter at 12pm. The 3:20 Church is located at 8601 Youngerman Circle, Jacksonville, FL.

25 teams represented to honor Larry Gill. I was told many others sent cards and signed baseballs. #ASJax pic.twitter.com/WirZzwXxTL

His laughter, and the way he remembered Jax beach kids names when he’d see them around the city at various other parks at tournaments. Larry will definitely be missed, pure class.

He was always a fair and energetic umpire. We will forever remember him as the umpire who cared enough that when my daughter (1 of the only 2 in her age group) got up to bat his first words to her were “girl power, show these boys how it’s done.” Forever in our hearts and prayers. We will miss you Umpire Larry.

The Ponte Vedra Athletic Association (PVAA) players, parents are sadden to hear of Umpire Larry’s passing. We’ve never seen a “blue” enjoy their job as much as Larry did. Larry always had a smile, an encouraging word for the players and was known for joking with the parents. Ballgames and tournaments won’t be the same without him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Umpires Larry’s family and friends as well as the players and coaches lives he touch both on and off the ball field.

Play Ball Blue! You will be missed.

Larry was a great friend to my wife and myself. He kind of introduced us to each other. We are married 33 years with 3 wonderful daughters. Thank you Larry. We will miss you. All of your friends in Bridgeport are lucky to have known you and your family. Rest in peace. We we’re all blessed to have had you in our lives! Bill and Iris Calovine

Larry was awesome. We are so sad to hear of his passing. Larry was always happy and I can remember him taking the extra time coaching up our catchers during games. God bless you Sir, enjoy His house!

I grew up around Larry and his wonderful family. Played ball with them. His dad was my coach on the all boys team when I became the first girl to play on the all boys little league team. God bless his family. Rip Larry

Larry and I met while in high school. Even then he was always smiling! Although we went in direct directions over the years hearing of his passing made me sad. May he rest in peace.

My prayers and condolences to his family.

As a catcher from OPAA, I would always talk to larry, sometimes more than I should. But one thing he could always do was put a smile on my face. The score didnt matter, we could be getting our asses handed to us and hed still make me laugh. I miss you already. You were a hero and a great guy. I’m saddened you will not be behind the plate with me anymore. I love you “blue.” look over me when im playing

The Gill family is one of the most respected family that I ever knew. Mr and Mrs Gill are the epitome of what parents should be. You have raised wonderful children, because of who you both are. I am truly grateful to know such amazing people. Lawrence was my friend and I will never forget what a gentleman he always was to me. I was always respected and treated like a queen. I will forever remember Larry Gill with his beautiful eyes and loving smile. RIP
